Cook County, Illinois — March 12, 2026 — The Veterans Assistance Commission of Cook County (VACCC) announced today that a rapid increase in requests for assistance from veterans and their families across Cook County has temporarily outpaced current staffing levels, requiring the agency to limit appointments to Disability Service Officer (DSO) cases only.
Due to the surge in demand, VACCC is temporarily scheduling appointments for Disability Service Officer cases only, and walk-in appointments are not available at this time. The adjustment is intended to ensure veterans with urgent disability claims and benefits issues continue receiving timely support.
Every day, more veterans are reaching out to VACCC for help with disability benefits, emergency financial assistance, and advocacy navigating federal, state, and local resources. While the commission’s staff continues to work tirelessly to meet these needs, the volume of requests has grown beyond the agency’s current capacity.
"Demand for veteran services in Cook County has grown dramatically,” said VACCC leadership. "Our staff is extraordinary and deeply committed to serving those who served our nation. However, we have been sounding the alarm for some time that additional staffing and resources are needed. This temporary adjustment reflects the reality that the need is greater than our current capacity.”
VACCC officials say expanding staffing and resources will allow the commission to restore full service availability, reduce wait times, and ensure every veteran who seeks help receives the assistance they deserve.
The commission remains committed to advocating for the resources necessary to meet the needs of Cook County’s veteran community.
